Cumberland County will redraw county commissioner district boundaries in 2021. The redrawing must be completed by November 17, in order for candidates to file for the 2022 election. County residents can demand an open redistricting process and districts that fairly represent communities in the county. Below is the current county districts boundaries map, basic demographic information, and how county residents can participate in ensuring a fair redistricting process in the county.

Events of the past year have brought well-deserved attention to the civil rights struggles of the 1960s and the tremendous sacrifices made to advance voting rights for all Americans. Now, as we work to restore the Voting Rights Act to its full power, we can take valuable lessons from the decades of struggle after the VRA was passed. Many battles still had to be fought in federal court to remove systemic barriers to racial justice in local and county elections, bringing lawsuits against discriminatory electoral systems city by city and county by county. Between 1984 and 2004, committed NC organizations, particularly the NAACP, as well as individual citizens and their legal teams, brought 67 VRA voting rights cases against city and county governments, winning most of them.
This month's webinar will shine a light on this history and its lessons for our own times. We will review the record of VRA court battles brought at the local level assembled by Anita Earls (now Justice Earls) in a landmark 2008 report on North Carolina's VRA cases.
We are honored to welcome Prof. Irving Joyner of NCCU's Law School, who will join us for a discussion on what we can learn from these fights for today's battle for fair representation in North Carolina as we head into this year's redistricting.

5:00 pm: Fair Districts Webinar: Here Come the Bills5:00 pm: Fair Districts Webinar: Here Come the Bills –
Redistricting reform legislation has been introduced in both the NC House and Senate. Just in time for our Day of Action (April 29), we're fortunate to have as our webinar guest for Wed., April 28 Rep. Pricey Harrison (D-Guilford), the lead sponsor of both bills introduced in the House so far. Rep. Harrison will get us ready to contact our legislators and urge them to hear these bills! She will discuss each of the bills as well as prospects for reform in time for this year's redrawing and give us tips for communicating effectively with legislators. Her bills include the Fair Act (H437) and Redistricting Criteria for 2021 (H495, also introduced in the Senate as S581). You can find links to these and other redistricting bills here: https://www.fairdistrictsnc.org/legislation-introduced H437 is a model bill that would establish an independent commission, very similar to the "gold standard bill" introduced last year. H495 takes advantage of new mathematical tools, developed in part by Duke math professors, to establish criteria that can diagnose gerrymandering before the first vote is cast. Join us to learn about the bills and get ready for the Day of Action (sign up for the Day of Action at fairdistrictsnc.org and encourage your friends and partners to join us, too!). FCNC |

For decades, whichever party in charge has drawn districts to keep themselves in power, undermining the voters' right to hold them accountable at the ballot box. Barring court action, the districts drawn this year will stay in place for 10 years and will determine whether North Carolinian voters' voices are heard at the ballot box or continue to be suppressed by gerrymandering.
We need a truly open, participatory, and transparent process with clear criteria for the coming redistricting of our congressional and legislative districts. Calling legislators' offices is the most effective way to send them a message. Join us to call your own legislators and the members of the redistricting committees. We'll provide the contact information, a basic script, talking points, and background info.
We can't let them use the Covid delays as an excuse to draw hyperpartisan maps outside public view. Demand better!
