Buncombe County Redistricting News:
9/23/2021. Buncombe County Commission districts will have to be redrawn by November 17, so that candidates can file for the 2022 election. Analysis of the new Census data by Fair Counties NC shows that Buncombe’s district populations are now too far out of line due to changes over the past decade. Commission district population should be about equal so voters have an equal say. That’s what “one person, one vote” requires. The accepted guideline is that no local district should be more than 5% above or below the new county population per commissioner. Redrawing is a must if the highest and lowest deviation total more than 10%. Buncombe’s districts are off by 11.7%!
Buncombe County is unusual in that the Buncombe County Commission typically uses the NC House legislative districts for its commission districts, since they each have three equal-population. districts. NCGA documents indicate that Buncombe will again be a single 3-district “cluster” by itself. All the more reason for Buncombe residents to play close attention to the legislative redrawing: they’ll be drawing your commission districts at the same time!

Buncombe County Board of Commissioners Structure
The Buncombe County Board of Commissioners has 7 members. Commissioners are elected from 3 districts. Each district elects 2 commissioners with one commissioner elected at-large. Commissioners serve 4-year staggered terms.
